What is community arts?

This page displays the community art projects I have led. To inquire about a community arts project with me visit this page!

Currently I am the Community Arts Associate at Baltimore Clayworks! Check out their website to learn more!
According to Tate.org community art is an artistic activity that is based in a community setting, characterized by interaction or dialogue with the community and often involving a professional artist collaborating with people who may not otherwise engage in the arts.

I think community arts is about bringing the community together and using the arts as the medium. Additionally, I think it creates beautiful things and changes lives along the way. Coming together to make art or surrounding art brings a light in life that I hope only grows to shine brighter.

Clay Class at Village Learning Place 2022

I will spend ten weeks with seven 5th Graders helping them to create the projects like small mosaics, tiles, and whatever else they want!

Clay Class at St. Francis Neighborhood Center 2022

For ten weeks I will be with a few lovely young artists introducing them to the world of clay working. We will be exploring larger topics and ideas such as community, self-agency, advocacy, and more all while learning about clay!

Recycled art days with Backyard Basecamp at BLISS Meadows 2021

Backyard Basecamp is a nonprofit located in East Baltimore City. They focus on urban farming and inspiring Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) to find nature where they are and empowering them to explore further.

Volunteers were presented with glass bottles and chopped wood pieces collected from the BLISS Meadows woods area in addition to donated tiles and allowed to use the provided materials freely. The created work will be used to decorate BLISS Meadows.

My son and I had so much fun! I definitely will bring him back to the next recycled art day. -Stephanie

Clay Tile Painting at CASA MD 2021

CASA Maryland is an immigrant advocacy organization with one of the locations in Baltimore, MD. In conjunction with my residency at Baltimore Clayworks the community was given an opportunity to paint tiles that would help to complete a sculpture that is being created by ceramicist George Rodriguez for CASA.

Clay Club at a Middle School 2021

For the privacy and protection of the students I have omitted things that will aid in identifying them.

A middle school in Baltimore, MD welcomes me each week after school to Clay Club to a group of 12 of their students. I create the curriculum and implement the ideas and creativity of the students following their lead. We have one short hour together but are making work that captures the beautiful ideas in their minds. I have overarching lesson goals and objectives but allow the students to decide on the end product to be able to implement my greatest goal of aiding in their agency as artists.
